The relocation industry has changed significantly. Technology has advanced. Self-service has expanded. Lump sums have grown. Employee choice and flexibility have become guiding principles in how many organizations design their mobility programs.
Much of that evolution has been labeled progress. But are we asking enough about the tradeoffs?
At NRI Relocation, we believe it is time to revisit some assumptions our industry has increasingly accepted: that more choice inherently creates a better employee experience, that self-service always represents innovation, and that simplifying a relocation program necessarily makes the relocation experience simpler.
The series will explore 5 questions we think deserve more attention:
- Is more employee choice always better?
- Does self-service eliminate work, or sometimes just transfer it?
- Is relocation really comparable to the other parts of our lives that we comfortably manage ourselves?
- What are the less visible costs of making relocation “simpler”?
- And ultimately, what should it mean to truly manage a relocation?
We believe technology, flexibility, and employee choice all have important roles in the future of mobility. But every model has tradeoffs, and progress should be measured by more than how much responsibility we enable employees to take on themselves. Sometimes asking better questions means being willing to challenge assumptions, including our own.
